Experience
As with a sport, learning has basic tenets. Students go from feeling comfortable to feeling invited to learn more, and then they know a particular subject. They feel more and more confident about themselves as they are questioned in a number of ways. Soon they realize their part in the human story and the very fabric of life itself.I believe in both traditional and modern styles of teaching. Tutoring individual students is, in my opinion, the best way to teach. Personally I like to present topics in more than one way so that different kinds of learners can understand what is being taught. If I am teaching Thoreau, for instance, I might ask them to put quotes from "Civil Disobedience" into their own words. I might ask that they create something visual from a passage of "Walden." If I am having a discussion with them about a scene in "Hamlet," I might do a map of characters or concepts on a board.I have attended both Connecticut College and Smith College. In my free time I like to do kayaking, hiking, and sailing.I think learning helps us to grow as people. To me, learning is life in the fullest sense of the word.
